Her father worked as a worker at the Maruti Udyog Limited manufacturing plant in Delhi. Her mother was a homemaker. When Mohita was in Class 7, her father retired from his job. This brought financial pressure on the family. But her father never let money become a barrier to her education. He always told her to study as much as she wanted.

Mohita is the only child of her parents. In traditional Indian society, some people still believe a family without a son is incomplete. These taunts hurt her family. But they also made Mohita more determined. She wanted to prove everyone wrong and make her parents proud.

Attempts 1 to 4 (2012–2015) – Learning Phase

In her first few attempts, she was still understanding the exam. She failed four consecutive times. This was a very tough phase. She was in her late twenties. Society often pressures women to give up their careers and get married at this age. But Mohita Sharma did not stop. She kept going.

During this time, she also cleared two other competitive exams. She qualified for the Assistant Commandant exam in Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) but was disqualified in the physical test. She also qualified for the Assistant Central Intelligence Officer (ACIO) exam in the Intelligence Bureau (IB).

In 2016, she joined the Election Commission of India (ECI) as an Assistant Section Officer (ASO). She worked in the Code of Conduct section. She was involved in preparations for the Uttar Pradesh assembly elections. She also worked on the SVEEP program, which promotes voter awareness.

Fifth Attempt – 2016 (AIR 262)

In her fifth and final attempt, she cleared UPSC CSE 2016. She secured an All India Rank 262. She was 27 years old.

She chose Geography as her optional subject. She took classroom coaching at Vajiram & Ravi Institute for General Studies and Geography. But she mostly relied on her own handwritten notes made from daily reading of The Hindu and The Indian Express newspapers.
