Shruti Sharma IAS Age, Early Life & Family

Shruti Sharma IAS was born on 3 January 1997 in Basta village, Chandpur Tehsil, Bijnor district of Uttar Pradesh. However, she grew up in East of Kailash, New Delhi. Because of this, Shruti Sharma experienced both small-town values and big-city opportunities while growing up.
Shruti Sharma’s age is 29 years. She comes from a family that values education and knowledge. Her great-grandfather Dayaswaroop Sharma was a well-known doctor and Vaidya in their village. Her grandfather Devendra Dutt Sharma was also a respected doctor.
Her father Sunil Dutt Sharma is an architect and engineer. He studied at NIT Kozhikode and later started a construction consultancy firm in Delhi. Apart from his work, he also runs a small school called Bal Gyan Niketan in their native village Basta.
Shruti Sharma’s mother Rachna Sharma is a former teacher and a postgraduate in science. She left her job to focus on raising her children. In her younger days, Rachna also dreamed of becoming a civil servant, but she could not pursue it because coaching facilities were limited in her village. When Shruti Sharma later topped the UPSC exam, her mother said that her own dream had finally come true.
Shruti also has a younger brother Aditya Sharma. He is a cricketer and has represented Uttar Pradesh in the Under-25 category.
As of now, Shruti Sharma IAS is not married. There is no confirmed public information about her husband.
Shruti Sharma UPSC Journey & Education

Shruti Sharma IAS completed her education at some well-known institutions in Delhi. She did her early schooling at Cambridge Primary School and later studied at Sardar Patel Vidyalaya. During her school years, she chose the Humanities stream in Class 11 and 12, where she developed an interest in subjects like history and politics.
After finishing school, she joined St. Stephen’s College at the University and completed her BA (Honours) in History. Later, Shruti Sharma continued her studies at Jawaharlal Nehru University, where she enrolled in a Master’s program in Modern History. She also studied Sociology at the Delhi School of Economics. Her academic background played an important role in her preparation for the UPSC Civil Services Examination.
UPSC Journey

Shruti Sharma IAS joined the Residential Coaching Academy (RCA) at Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi. This academy is funded by the UGC. It provides free coaching and accommodation to women and students from disadvantaged backgrounds. The environment there was very helpful. She got a strong community of fellow aspirants and experienced mentors. In the 2021 UPSC results, 23 candidates from Jamia’s RCA cleared the exam. Shruti led them all as AIR 1.
Shruti started her UPSC preparation about four years before her final success. Her first serious attempt was in 2019/2020.
During this attempt, she made an error while filling her application form. Due to a technical glitch, her medium of instruction for Mains was registered as Hindi instead of English. English was her natural language for writing.
This was a big problem. The UPSC Mains exam requires thousands of words of detailed, analytical writing. Writing all of that in a non-primary language is extremely difficult. You can also check struggles of Junaid Ahmad and Vinay Tiwari who both also cracked UPSC.
But Shruti did not give up. She appeared for the Mains in Hindi. She did her best. She missed the cut-off for the interview by just one mark.
This near-miss was painful. But she used it as motivation. She told herself — “If I could come this close writing in Hindi, imagine what I can do in English.” That confidence pushed her forward.
Second Attempt – AIR 1
In her second attempt, she came back fully prepared. She wrote her exam in English. She dominated every section. The result? All India Rank 1 in UPSC CSE 2021.

Her score was significantly higher than the second-ranked candidate. Ankita Agarwal came second with 1050 marks — a gap of 55 marks. In UPSC, where ranks are often decided by a single mark, a 55-mark lead is extraordinary.
